INTERIOR ROUTE · SIERRA DEL MONTSANT AND PRADES MOUNTAINS
This route will allow us to get to know the mountainous area of the Priorat and Baix Camp counties, crossing the Prades and Montsant mountains.
It is an ideal itinerary to do without haste, enjoying the perfect mix of towns and their surroundings. In it we will know beautiful places and corners, such as the Sierra del Montsant also known as the mountain range of peace and tranquility.
Walking through it we will have the feeling that time stops and that the rhythm of life changes substantially as we enter these lands.
RIUDOMS
It is an important agricultural center thanks to the cultivation of olives and hazelnuts.
It is worth visiting the Hermitage of St. Antoni, as well as Plaça Major, where the parish church of St. Jaume stands.
Also in Plaça Major we find a porticoed sector with 16 arcades from the s. XVI, reconstructed with the ruins of the cloister of the Franciscan convent of St. Joan.
In Riudoms is the birthplace of Gaudí, a modernist architect of great importance, author of the Sagrada Familia among other important buildings; although really, the birth of Gaudí is currently disputed between Reus and Riudoms. There is also the Mas de la Caldera, where Gaudí spent his childhood summers.
CORNUDELLA DE MONTSANT
This town has a modernist winery, the work of César Martinell.
The Archpriest Church of Sta. María (17th century) from the first Catalan Renaissance is also a must.
At the foot of the Montsant mountain range we find the Hermitage of St. Joan de Codolar. The primitive hermitage, from the s. XII, has undergone various reconstructions and extensions throughout the centuries. The current construction dates from 1780.
SIURANA
Its historical ensemble is cataloged as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. It also highlights the excellent panoramic view, which has attractions such as the Prades mountains or the Siurana reservoir.
This small medieval-style village has its streets arranged in an irregular layout, and is located on a spur of calcareous rock surrounded by precipices. One of them is known as the Salto de la Reina Mora.
The legend of this place tells how the Moorish queen Adelazaida, seeing her castle besieged and her husband dead, threw herself into the void so as not to die a victim of the Christians.
Ruins of the last Arab castle in Catalonia are preserved. Conquered by Ramón Berenguer IV in 1153. It also has a Romanesque church from the s. XII.
ULLDEMOLINS
Rural nucleus located in a place of exceptional beauty. In the center of the town we find the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Loreto, with a sgraffito façade and an interior in which we can contemplate an important set of Byzantine paintings.
On the outskirts of the town is the Hermitage of Sta. Magdalena (16th century), also called the Montsant Cathedral due to its large size. The Hermitage of St. Antoni (15th century) has been restored and is a recreational area par excellence. This is where the impressive Fraguerau gorge is located, where silence becomes music for our spirit.
The Hermitage of St. Bartomeu is Romanesque (14th century) and has its origin in a cave formed by two rocks that are propped up one on top of the other.
Halfway between the hermitages of St. Antoni and St. Bartomeu, we can contemplate a landscape of great beauty where the river Montsant has formed a natural pool. It is what the locals call the Cadolles Fondes.
PRADES
This unique town is located in the middle of the Sierra de Prades. Of its monumental complex, the characteristic reddish stone that has given it the nickname of Vila Vermella (Red Town) stands out. To highlight the remains of the medieval walls, especially its two portals.
At the entrance to the town stands the Creu de Terme, a beautiful cross possibly from the 15th century. XIII. In the arcaded square is the famous Renaissance spherical fountain, which during the cava festival only has cava. Also located in this square is the Church of Sta. María, in the Romanesque-Gothic style.
Leaving Prades, towards Vilanova de Prades, we find the Tossal de la Baltasana. It is the highest point of the Prades and Baix Camp mountains, and is 1,202 meters high.
