GUIDE TO TARRAGONA and its surroundings…

The city of Tarragona, magnificently located in front of the Mediterranean Sea, is a city that has much to offer tourists, at any time of the year.

We can divide the city into two areas of tourist interest:

“the old core”, located at the top of the hill, known as the “part alt” and which will coincide with the ancient Roman and later medieval city;

and “the Eixample area”, from the 19th century. XIX, modern and commercial area, with Rambla Nova as the main axis.

Tarraco was founded by Publi Gneu Escipió in 218 BC. The visit to the Archaeological Museum and the Amphitheater or the walk along the Roman Wall testify to the brilliance that it will become the capital of Hispania Citerior.

In the 5th century, with the invasion of Germanic peoples, the decline began. In 714 it was invaded by Muslims. It will be destroyed and uninhabited for four centuries. Starting in the 12th century, thanks to the reconquest and subsequent repopulation, the city entered a new stage, of which medieval vestiges remain. One of the most important is the Cathedral, construction began in 1171.
